Better than Moses

Reflect on the superiority of Jesus over Moses in Hebrews 3:1-6. Consider Jesus, the builder of God’s house, and deepen your confidence and hope in Him.

Scripture: Hebrews 3:1-6 (ESV)

“Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honour than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.”

Devotion:

Shortly after my wife and I got married, we went to Europe and like all good tourists we went to see the Mona Lisa in Paris. It is of course a world renowned painting. It is one of the great masterpieces of Leonardo Da Vinci. And like all beautiful masterpieces it is intricate and detailed. Judging by the number of selfie sticks and mobile cameras it inspired, the painting is admired by people from around the world. But the painting, while remarkable, is nothing compared to the skill and creativity of the artist who made it. The artist deserves far more praise than the artwork itself, although I suppose a selfie with Leo’s body probably doesn’t get quite as many likes on the gram…

But that idea, that the artist should get more praise than the artwork is the same message the author if Hebrews wants us to understand. The author calls us, to consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession. Just as Moses was faithful in God’s house, so was Jesus. However, Jesus is worthy of far more glory than Moses. Because while Moses was a faithful servant, Jesus is the Son, the builder of the house. Moses was part of the house, but Jesus is the one who created it.

Now how does this apply to us today? It seems to me that the most relevant application is to think of our celebrity pastors. It is not unusual for people to follow after a pastor when he leaves a church to go to another church. It is not unusual, especially in today’s day and age for people to follow after the pastor with the highest social media profile. To follow them, not because they have sound theology, but because they are the most popular. We have a tendency to focus on the visible, the immediate, and sometimes the less significant. We may admire and respect these pastors, but like Moses, they are at best part of God’s plan. People are not the source of God’s plan. People cannot bring about the salvation of people. That glory rightly belongs to Jesus – the only one who deserves our worship.

So consider who you follow, and how you follow them. If the people you follow don’t consistently point you away from themselves and on to Jesus, you can know for sure you need to hit the unfollow button.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Thank You for faithful servants like Moses, but remind us always that Jesus is the builder of the house. Strengthen our confidence and hope in Him, that we may hold fast to our faith. Amen.

Spiritual Challenge: Today, take a moment to consider Jesus. Reflect on His role as the builder of God’s house and your place within it. Let this truth deepen your confidence and hope in Him.
