Who you are is about whose you are

What is your identity?

Scripture: Romans 2:25-29 (ESV)

“For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. Therefore, if the uncircumcised man keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.”

Devotion:

Have you ever worn a badge or uniform, feeling it somehow made you part of a special group? It’s easy to think that outward symbols or actions can secure our identity or standing in a community. Paul’s message here cuts through that illusion, focusing instead on the heart of the matter—quite literally.

Circumcision was a key symbol of the Jewish faith, a mark of God’s covenant with His people. Yet, Paul argues that the physical act is meaningless if the individual’s actions contradict the law’s requirements. It’s as if he’s saying, “What’s the use of wearing a team jumper if you’re playing for the opposite side?”

The content below was originally paywalled.

What would have been particularly shocking for the Jews of the day to hear is what Paul says next: if someone who isn’t circumcised actually lives by God’s law, their lack of a physical mark doesn’t exclude them from God’s people. In fact, their actions put them more in line with God’s will than those who wear the symbol but ignore its significance.

This passage is a radical reminder that our standing with God isn’t about external rituals or symbols. It’s about the condition of our hearts and our willingness to be led by the Spirit. It doesn’t matter whether you responded to an altar call, prayed the sinner’s prayer, or came to believe in Jesus in the quiet stillness of your bedroom by yourself. The issue isn’t whether you have gone through the ritual. The issue is whether Jesus lives in your heart, whether your heart has be “circumcised” by the Holy Spirit. Jesus embodies this principle. He didn’t just fulfill the law; He internalized it, living out its precepts perfectly. Through Him, we’re invited to undergo a “circumcision of the heart,” where what counts is not our outward adherence to rituals but our inner transformation by His grace.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to understand that true belonging to You isn’t about external symbols or rituals but about a heart transformed by Your Spirit. Teach me to value inner purity over outward appearance, and to live in a way that reflects Your love and righteousness. May my identity in You be rooted in my heart’s condition, transformed by Your grace. Amen.

Challenge for the Day:

Reflect on any “external badges” you might be clinging to as proof of your spiritual identity. Consider how you can focus more on allowing God’s Spirit to work within you, transforming your heart and actions. Today, let your deeds speak of your faith more loudly than any outward symbol ever could.
